Rethinking Water Planning

Why is the project relevant to you?

This project has highlighted the statutory water plans as core to these approaches delivery, however it is importantly noted that the additional consideration of Local Planning Authority local plans; LPA local flood risk management strategies; and surface water management plans would benefit the process. It has been highlighted that one of the challenges that make it hard to incorporate a detailed understanding of water into local plans is the number of plans water sits under. This project has explored ways to bring the decision making side of these plans together which  could potentially make the water picture easier to understand.

Key messages for Town and Country Planning Specialists

The participatory systems mapping element of the case studies shows the complexity of the water system. It also begins to explore how decisions on housing, growth, development location, and associated infrastructure are intrinsically linked to our water environment.

1

The water evidence and plans that are created and used by local authorities is inherently linked to those produced by others in the water industry. More work needs to be done across the water industry and with other plan makers to make evidence bases and optioneering consistent and shareable.

2

We encourage local planners to maximise opportunities to help resolve water related issues through the planning process. Therefore the consideration of  water management catchment areas is highly recommended rather than the rigidly sticking to political boundaries.
